biography 

Dr. Barry D. Denton started his law enforcement career in 1989 as a police cadet with the Jefferson County Police Department and retired as a sergeant from the Louisville Metro Police Department in December, 2012. In his twenty-five years of service he patrolled in five

of the eight police divisions, worked as the public information officer and served as a domestic violence detective. After being promoted to the rank of Sergeant, he was the Assistant Commander of the Community Relations Unit, Commander of the Recruitment and Selection Unit, Assistant Commander of the Traffic Unit and commanded the Bomb Squad. During his career he also served on the Federal Bureau of Investigation Joint Terrorism Task Force and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Bomb Task Force. 

Upon retirement from the Louisville Metro Police Department in December of 2012, he took over as the Executive Director of the Louisville Metro Police Foundation, the only non-profit organization that raises support for the Louisville Metro Police Department. He held this position until February of 2016 when he became the Senior Vice President of Mission Advancement of Masonic Homes of Kentucky. Then in 2018 he became the executive director of the American Heart Association of Kentuckiana. Today, Dr. Denton is a Senior Vice President of The Denton Group where he handles non-profit development and executive coaching. Dr. Denton also currently serves as a Lieutenant with the Spencer County Sheriff's Office. He is also a assistant professor at the University of Louisville Department of Criminal Justice, an adjunct instructor for Indiana Wesleyan University and the American Military Institute where he teaches courses in law enforcement, emergency management, anti-terrorism and homeland security. 

Educationally, he has a bachelor’s of science degree from the University of Louisville in Justice Administration, a master’s degree in Emergency Management and Homeland Security from the American Military Institute, a second master’s degree from the University of Louisville in Police Administration and a doctorate in Organizational and Educational Leadership in December from Spalding University. He also received a certificate in leadership studies from Eastern Kentucky University and graduated with honors from the Southern Police Institute Administrative Officers Course with a focus in transformational leadership. He is also a graduate of Focus Louisville, Ignite Louisville,

Leadership Louisville and Leadership Kentucky.

Dr. Denton has been engaged in civic activities for over twenty five years. He currently serves as on the Kentucky Derby Festival board of directors. He formerly served as the Vice President of the St. Matthews Chamber of Commerce and served as a board member on the Kentucky Chamber Health and Wellness Council.

Dr. Denton also serves as a Staff Officer of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, where he is currently assigned as the National A-Director Branch Chief for Program Marketing, District Aide to the Commodore, Division Public Affairs Officer, Immediate Past Flotilla Commander, Flotilla Publications Officer and Flotilla Communications Service Officer. He also serves on the boat crew. Dr. Denton also has been a contributor to various media outlets, including Fox and Friends to local news stations and radio stations.
